Once common throughout Florida, working waterfronts have all but disappeared due to development, with seafood industries being replaced by waterfront condos and the like. WBSC - WBS, Pirogue, Plywood

The Plywood Canoe is a great boat building project for families or groups of 2 to 4 people. When completed, the canoe is 15' 3" in length with a 31 ½" beam. It can be paddled with kayak or canoe paddles. Inexpensive to build using ordinary tools and materials, the canoe gives everybody access to boat building and a boat. The course runs three days with an optional day of painting on the fourth day. This boat is built using plywood sheets and dimensional lumber and uses many of the techniques used in building larger boats including lofting. This boat is suitable for one adult, an adult and child, two children, or an adult and a couple of dogs. We will provide all of the materials, tools, and instructors to keep you and your friends and family on the right course. We will build up to three boats in a weekend, and group size is limited to four. You take the boat home with you on your car top or in the back of a pickup. Please contact us with any questions at WoodenBoatSchool@AMMFL.Org or ask for Wooden Boat Director Ron Dierolf at 850-653-2500 to schedule.

WBSCLP - WBS, Chesapeake Lightcraft, Passagemaker

Under the guidance of our boat builder, you can construct this vessel from plans and materials obtained from Chesapeake Light Craft (http://www.clcboats.com/). The rowing version of this boat is built in six or seven days. At the end of the session you have a boat ready for finishing which takes two to three weeks. Another two days is required to complete the spars and rig the boat for sailing. Our program is modeled after successful programs we have observed at the Wooden Boat School in Maine and in numerous other programs sponsored by such noteworthy programs as Mystic Seaport, (and others) whereby small groups of two to six come together to fund and build the boat with the group sponsor taking possession of the craft at the end. A handy boat that can be rowed, sailed, and powered with up to three large adults. The Passagemaker Dinghy is easy to build but looks great and performs beautifully. A smooth glide when rowing, spirited performance when sailing, and steady handling with an outboard. This is the perfect dinghy for folks with larger boats. For those tired of moving heavy, traditional dinghies that weigh 200 pounds, or struggling with a limp, awkward inflatable that can't be rowed or sailed, Designer John C. Harris has drawn an elegant, Norwegian-styled pram that weighs only 90lbs, but can survive real abuse. With a 650-pound payload, the Passagemaker can haul the entire crew in one go, quite a lot of cargo. The sailing rig components store flat inside the 11'7" hull; fasten three shrouds and the mainsheet, hoist up the mainsail and jib, and you've got a fast, fun, stable sailing dinghy that will please even the most ardent and discriminating sailing enthusiast. If you have a long harbor to cross, a 2, 3, or 4 horsepower outboard will drive the Passagemaker to harbor speed limits and beyond. An electric outboard for fishing lakes will work great, too. If you don't want to lug around an outboard and smelly gas, you'll be delighted to discover how well the Passagemaker rows: there's plenty of rocker for low wetted surface and the transom won't drag in the water to slow you down. Please contact us with any questions at WoodenBoatSchool@AMMFL.Org or ask for Wooden Boat Director Ron Dierolf at 850-653-2500 to schedule.

WBSCLK - WBS Chessapeake Lightcraft, Kayak

Under the guidance of our boat builder, you can construct a vessel from plans and materials obtained from Chesapeake Light Craft (http://www.clcboats.com/). The construction time is six days. At the end of the session you have a kayak that has been fiberglassed and is read for finishing. Finishing takes approximately two weeks. An optional rudder is available. The short term building programs is modeled after successful programs we have observed at the Wooden Boat School in Maine and in numerous other programs sponsored by such noteworthy programs as Mystic Seaport, (and others) whereby small groups of two to six come together to fund and build the boat with the group sponsor taking possession of the craft at the end. More than 6,300 Chesapeake-series kits have been shipped over the last 10 years. An enduring favorite among paddlers, the Chesapeakes are the gold standard for build-it-yourself sea kayaks. They are easy to build but handsome and fast. High-volume bows lift you over rough seas - or powerboat wakes - while the skeg-like stern prevents weather-cocking in blustery winds. CLC's signature cambered decks shed spray, increase the storage space inside the hull, add strength without weight, and look great. Chesapeake kayak builders explore quiet local rivers and paddle the length of the Sea of Cortez. Chesapeakes are built in garages, apartments, living rooms, television studios, and in at least 50 countries from Iceland to Australia. Large storage compartments will absorb enough gear and water for long, unsupported expeditions. Cockpits are large and easy to pad out for a custom fit. The big, comfortable cockpit is an ideal spot to spend a lazy afternoon if multi-week expeditions aren't your speed. Chesapeakes are built to endure a lifetime of strenuous touring with 4mm-okoume plywood hulls and decks, both sheathed with fiberglass. Watertight bulkheads are standard, as are hatches, deck rigging, adjustable footbraces, and a comfortable seat. One reason so many builders prefer the Chesapeakes is their flexible architecture, unique among kit boats. Experienced builders may customize every part of the boat above the waterline, whether building from a kit or plans. The Wood Duck is a serious kayak in its own right but is stable enough for a beginner. Please email WoodenBoatSchool@AMMFL.Org or ask for Wooden Boat School Director Ron Dierolf at 850-653-2500 with any questions or to schedule.

WBSCLS - WBS, Chessapeake Lightcraft, Stand Up Paddleboard

Under the guidance of our boat builder, you can construct a great paddleboard from plans and materials obtained from Chesapeake Light Craft (http://www.clcboats.com/). Construction time is six days. At the end of the session you have a fiberglassed paddleboard that is ready for finishing, which takes about two weeks. Please email WoodenBoatSchool@AMMFL.Org or ask for Wooden Boat School Director Ron Dierolf at 850-653-2500 for more information. Why are Stand-Up Paddleboards all the rage? Because they're ridiculously fun--like walking on water. Working with surfing and paddleboard guru Larry Froley of Gray Whale Trading in California, these boards are created with that rare quality of being fast enough to race but stable enough for first-timers. Tracking is great and a fine bow with kayak-derived shaping lifts the Kaholo 14 up and over waves. The tail shape and twin fins facilitate surfing on long swells once your skills build up to that. With their uncanny speed, the Kaholo has found a following among racers. The 14 design is good for larger paddlers (or those who might carry along dogs or small kids). There are no other SUP boards in the world that are easier for a first-time boatbuilder, or better-looking. The Kaholo 14 measures 14'0" long, 29" wide, 4-5/8" thick, and comes in around 32 pounds. The construction materials include premium nonskid deck pads, cut to shape, breather tubes, and custom laminated skegs. The construction process allows ways to customize the board with fabrics and other stylish tweaks. Designer John C. Harris counted himself among the skeptics before trying out his first SUP in California in 2006. "It's the most amazing sensation---as close to walking on water as you're going to get. But a little faster. You achieve kayak-like speeds, but your visibility is vastly improved because your eyes are so much higher off the water. You can see more, see further, and in clear water you have a much better view of sea life than you do in a kayak." It's also a major workout---every muscle in your body is at work as you ride over waves and work the long-handled SUP paddle. If taking a walk is healthy, taking a walk on water is healthy AND the view is better. Harris says he can envision shifting one of his hobbies---wandering marinas on foot looking at boats---to a Kaholo. Nature lover? Paddle quietly through the shallows. The Kaholos are okoume marine plywood, stitched-and-glued together and sheathed in fiberglass and epoxy, with a grid of bulkheads and stiffeners inside to make the boards stiff and light. Please contact us with any questions at WoodenBoatSchool@AMMFL.org or ask for Wooden Boat Director Ron Dierolf at 850-653-2500 to schedule.

WBSCLW - WBS, Chessapeake Lightcraft, Wherry Rowing Shell

Under the guidance of our boat builder, construct this vessel from plans and materials obtained from Chesapeake Light Craft (http://www.clcboats.com/). Construction time is six to eight days. At the end of session you have functional boat ready for finishing, which takes two to four weeks. The Annapolis Wherry offers thoroughbred performance on the water combined with breathtaking grace. The Annapolis Wherry has been turning heads since 1997, with hundreds and hundreds built all over the world. Solid stability, sea kindly lines, excellent tracking, a buoyant bow, and ample flare make the Wherry a natural choice for rowing in choppy conditions. The open design allows for plenty of sprawling and a picnic basket when beach cruising. Stability is strong for a performance rowing boat: you can step into the boat from a dock and even stand up. However, the narrow waterline means that the Annapolis Wherry is as fast as many “rec” shells, sprinting at 7 knots and cruising at 4-5 knots. At this speed you could cover 30 or 40 miles in a day. We hear of Wherries being used for camping and fishing expeditions. The Annapolis Wherry is at its best with a sliding seat. From the beginning the interior was designed around a Piantedosi Row Wing, the nicest sliding seat unit on the market. Used with a sliding seat, the Wherry might be unsurpassed as a rowing trainer, exercise boat, long-distance cruiser, or even for open water racing. Please email WoodenBoatSchool@AMMFL.Org or ask for Wooden Boat School Director Ron Dierolf at 850-653-2500 for more information or to schedule.

WBSWS - WBS, Weekend Skiff

The Weekend Skiff is another great boat building project ofr families or groups of 2 to 4 people. When commpleted, the skiff is just over 15 feet in length wit a beam of about 4 feet. It can be built in three versions - a rowing version, a version suitable for a small outboard motor trolling motor, and a sailing version. The motorized version is the basic rowing version with a reinforced transom, additional bracing, and flotation. The sailing version includes a dagger board, keel, rudder, and gaff-rigged sail plan. Inexpensive to build using ordinary tools and materials, the skiff gives everybody access to boat building and a boat.

This boat is related to our popular Pirogue but is a little more complex requiring seats, risers, and more frames. The rowing/motorized configuration takes 4-5 days and the sailing version takes 5-6 days to build, depending the time spent each day. This boat is built using plywood sheets and dimensional lumber and uses many of the techniques used in building larger boats including lofting. This boat is suitable for two adults.

We will provide all of the materials, tools, and instructors to keep you and your friends and family on the right course. We will build up to three boats in a weekend, and group size is limited to 4. The costs are as follows:

Rowing Version: $500, including oarlocks, not including oars

Motorized Version: $600, including foam floatation

Sailing Version: $750, not including sail

Kayak / Canoe trip from Buford Dam to Settles Bridge

Be sure to enter the Promotional Code WEBSTORE in Step #7, Confirmations, when making your reservation in order to apply the thirty percent (30%) discount from booking on the web store.

This is a relatively short trip through the most beautiful part of the National Park Service land.  The river runs clear here with visibility of depths of up to 20 feet.  Be sure to look for trout in the pools. This is also the most challenging stretch of whitewater.  Pass to the right of Bowman's island, where you enter an area of class 1 and 2 whitewater rapids with mostly shallow water.  A trail follows the river on the east side below the island that leads up to Island Ford Road.  You will see the State Trout hatchery on your right by the outflow pipe and then Richland Creek joining on the left side further down.  Give respect to the class 3 rapid following a long calm stretch just before the highway 20 bridge.  It is best to stop and get a visual inspection of the rapid and watch some others go through if it is your first time.  You can get on the land to the rocks on the right the approach to the big rock.  We normally shoot straight through the center and then eddy out in the large pool and beach to the left.  Be sure to keep your paddle in the water and have good forward momentum since it helps stability and control.  If you capsize, make for the right shore quickly to avoid the fallen tree strainers just down river.  From there the river calms down a lot from there on.  It is mostly calm water on down to Settles Bridge. In passing under the SR 20 bridge look for the old bridge structures just past SR 20 that provide a glimpse into the past. Take out to the eastern shore of the river (left side) when you see the old metal bridge that goes half way across the river from the western shore (right side).

ZZZ Gift Shop Sales on Consignment for XXX vendor

Consignment Sales are another area where transactions are entered as a “trip”.   This is the same as a Gift Shop sale, except that the “trip” is the name of the consignment vendor (e.g. Katy Greene, jeweler) and only vendor supplied consignment items are displayed for selection on the Step #5 screen.  In this exercise you will accept payment for an item placed on consignment with the Gift Shop item in the ZZZ - Test Outfitter.    The items for a Consignment Vendor will generally be in price groups, so you will look for the price tag on the vendor item and locate the corresponding price group Item on the Step 5 Upgrades screen that matches the price of the Vendor Item.  In the Exercise below, you will sell one of the $20 items by using the ZZZ consignment - $20 price group item on Step 5.  This is different from the Exercise One example where we looked up items by their description.  Here we select the price group corresponding to the tag on the consignment item.

ZZZ Donations and Other Cash Receipts

The Donations “trip” charge is $0.00 and at the Step #5 screen there are four items ($1,000, $100, $10 and $1 items) where the quantity is selected to allow incrementing of the amount to equal the amount of the Donation or Check received through the mail.  Prepare a separate transaction for each checks or donation received from a different person.  In the Exercise below, we will enter a transaction to account for the receipt of a $95 check for a donation.  This would be accomplished by selecting 9 of the Z10 Cash increment $10 and 5 of the ZZ1 Cash increment $1.

ZZZ Coffee/Tea Sales

Coffee sales are not recorded on the web store for each cup of coffee or tea.  This is because these items do not have a direct one to one relationship with the variety of ingredients used to make these beverages.  Instead, all of the money received for the sale of these items will be placed in the clear plastic box on the counter by the customer.  Each day, the administrative manager will open the box with another Visitor Center Staff present and count the amount of money in the box.  This amount is entered in the same fashion as the Donation example in Exercise Three above.  In this example, you should plan for the Coffee fund to be $27.  The Z10 Cash increment $10 and ZZ1 Cash increment $1are utilized to enter the appropriate amount.
